During the British Raj, Tea was brought to India.

Tea was introduced to India and Pakistan by the British in the nineteenth century and the first area to be planted was the mountain region surrounding the Himalayan foothills in the 1850s. In the state of Assam, tea grew in the wild. 

Now tea is one of the most important cash crops and plays a significant role in rural development, poverty reduction and food security in exporting and developing countries. It is a principle source of livelihood for millions of smallholder producers. Tea has also a cultural significance in many societies.

Tea Culture in Pakistan

Apart from water, tea is the most consumed drink in Pakistan.

In Pakistani culture offering tea to your friends and family is very common, it does not matter which social status you belongs to, tea is part of every household in the country. In fact tea is much more affordable, easily available and prepared that low income families prefer to offer tea to their guests rather than any soft drink.

It does not matter if its winter of summer, tea is equally liked in all seasons. Many like to serve tea with savoury items like samosas and shami kebab.  People with the sweet tooth like tea serving with cake and pastry. When the rainy season come, many love their tea with pakoras.
